Research in Translation and Terminology: Questions of Methodology
The graduate students in translation and terminology are pleased to invite you to participate in their third conference in translation and terminology (JETT), which will take place at the Department of Linguistics and Translation of the University of Montreal, on May 5th. This year, the conference aims at encouraging reflection on research methodologies in translation and terminology. We are honoured to host, as a keynote speaker, Professor Hélène Buzelin, from the University of Montreal, who will share with us her expertise in Translation Studies.
By virtue of their interdisciplinary nature, Translation Studies and Terminology, over time, have appealed to manifold students and scholars belonging to different disciplines. Their interest in research methodologies is proved by the rising number of texts and articles published on the topic (e. g. Olohan 2000, Hermans 2002, Williams & Chesterman 2002, Gile 2011, Saldanha & O’Brien 2014). These texts struggle to demonstrate how the choice, and consequently the adoption of an appropriate methodology are fundamental to produce reliable results, and to make feasible projects which can contribute to the discipline. Ideally, a project proposes a methodology which is repeatable or, at least, adaptable to other researches belonging to the same field or to different disciplines. Our graduate students conference will revolve around the impact that methodological choices may have on research projects in translation and terminology. Eventually, links between research in methodology, ethics and epistemology will be also investigated.
Participants are invited to share with us their research experience from the methodological standpoint. More specifically, they are asked to discuss the questions raised by their research project, the obstacles and the promising avenues they have faced during their research experience.
The conference languages will be French and English. Participants can deliver their presentation in the following manner:
- through a 20-minute individual presentation
- through a poster presentation
Eventually, various translation and terminology scholars will participate in a roundtable discussion.
Submissions may be in either French or English and should include an abstract of approximately 300 – 350 words. Please submit your proposals electronically to jour.traterm.udem@gmail.com by March 31st. Please make sure to include the title of your presentation, the name of your study program and university of origin, as well as your contact details.
