• During World War I (1914–18), a tremendous number of bison were killed by hunters and soldiers, and in the early 1920s the last bison in the wild was killed by a poacher (illegal hunter).

• Fines and jail sentences are thus used to deter developers from destroying the habitat of endangered golden-cheeked warblers (Dendroica chrysoparia) in the US or poachers from killing black rhinoceroses (Diceros bicornis) in many African countries.

• But the alligator is still being decimated by poachers because of the lucrative markets in France and Japan.
