• For many years, the NWHC has investigated disease in high-profile species, such as the bald eagle (Halieeatus leucocephalus), gray wolf (Canis lupus), red wolf (C. rufus), southern sea otter (Enhydra lutris nereis), whooping crane (Grus americana), and Mississippi sandhill crane (G. canadensis pulla).

• Eleven animals are listed under the Wildlife Act. The swift fox, plains bison, whooping crane, and peregrine falcon are listed as endangered.

• Although the exact number is unknown, Whooping Cranes were uncommon, and their numbers had rapidly declined by the late 19th century.
