Second Graduate Students Conference in Translation and Terminology

« Theory and Practice: A Marriage of Convenience? »
The graduate students in translation are pleased to invite you to participate in their second conference in translation and terminology (JETT), which will take place at the Department of Linguistics and Translation of the University of Montreal, on April 30th. This year, the conference aims at encouraging reflection on the multifarious aspects and dimensions of translation intended as a theory and a practice. We are honoured to host, as a keynote speaker, Professor Deborah Folaron from Concordia University (Montreal), who will share with us her expertise on the topic.The practice of translation and terminology dates back to the ancient times. In fact, knowledge and intercultural communication transfer has been playing a crucial role in the history of humanity for ages, or rather, millenniums. According to Fawcett et al. (2010), readers should perceive the interaction between theory and practice as a dialogue. Regardless of the standpoint from which translation scholars and translators view this subject,one might take these two apparently separated poles as being in constant communication. As it was done ten years ago on the occasion of Meta’s 50th anniversary, the conference will revolve around the following question yet again: « Should research be translated into practice? » The opportunity of a « marriage » between theory and practice will be carefully scrutinized.

 

Participants are invited to discuss how their researches can contribute to improving the practice of translation and terminology, and how practice can contribute to developing the theory of translation and terminology.

 

We invite submissions engaging with one or more of the following topics:

 

Theory and practice:

  • What kind of convergences or oppositions can be established between translation and terminology scholars, and between translators and terminologists?
  • Has theory encouraged translators and terminologists to change their way to approach a text?
  • Has theory paved the way for new ways of translating texts?
  • How have multifarious theoretical approaches been integrated to the terminological analysis?
  • If theories describe what translators do, in what way can they be considered as a translation tool? (Fawcett et al. 2010 : XII)
  • Translation and terminology scholars are getting more and more inspired by theories coming from other disciplines to widen their scope. How do the teaching and knowledge of these new theories influence the practice of translation or terminology?
  • How can translation history be useful for the practice of translation?
  • How can theoretical approaches influence the elaboration of different terminographic products like dictionaries, ontologies or thesauri?
  • How can we integrate the different theoretical and practical aspects to the didactics of translation and terminology?
  • What is the influence of new technologies on the theory and practice of translation and terminology?

The conference languages will be English and French. Participants can deliver their presentation in the following manner:

  • through a 20-minute individual presentation
  • through a poster presentation

 

A third option, a 7-minute presentation, is offered to students willing to share their research project. Eventually, translation and terminology scholars from various universities will participate in a roundtable discussion.

Submissions may be in either English or French and should include an abstract of approximately 300 – 350 words. Please submit your proposals electronically to jour.traterm.udem@gmail.com by March 13th. Please make sure to include the title of your presentation, the name of your study program and university of origin, as well as your contact details.
