Scanner - like a photocopier it scans a full page with laser light but instead of printing copies, it transmits the image to the computer as digital code, which can be saved as a file.

Maybe you have to scan some documents and convert them to editable text with OCR software.

Also, please remember that it is against Copyright laws to use this method to pass software which you did not pay for, or to pass images which were scanned from copyrighted material (such as a album cover).

Simply scan the image, send it to the software program (where you can adjust the picture), and then send it to the printer.

Many other scanners exist that serve a single purpose. There are tiny business-card scanners, film scanners, slide scanners, and even pen-sized scanners used to pick up individual lines of text from a book.

Scanners allow you to transfer pictures and photographs to your computer.

So if Dave in Accounting offers to bring in his flatbed scanner and do the job on site, it's probably the easiest ad hoc hardware solution.

Clean glass is imperative for successful scanning.

Multifunction peripherals, sometimes based on laser printing but more often using ink jet technology, combine printing, scanning, copying, plain-paper faxing, and sometimes PC faxing.

Multifunction peripherals generally cost between $400 and $1,000, with higher-priced units offering faster print speeds and higher-resolution printing, copying, and scanning.

A word processor spends 95 % of the time waiting for your input and displaying it on the screen.

You'll need to take one final step before we move to the browser-based installation screen - file permissions.

[script] This is a generic term for quite a few similar things. Essentially, a script is a series of commands to be executed without user interaction.

Once you get good at script writing you could probably write a script that would retreive a page, parse it for desired information and extract it when it finds it, and then e-mail just that information to you.

Developed by Microsoft, ASP is a programming environment that processes scripts on the Web server.

Scripting languages illustrate how far one can go in defining general-purpose languages.

For my money shell scripting is one of the most fun and interesting things to play around with because it is the key tool for automation.

If you want to set up a serious Web server you'll want some kind of scripting capability.

Here you can select to expand a lot of the sub menus on the start menu for quicker access, decide whether you'd like the Programs menu to scroll or not when it's larger than the screen height, and deselect some of the items showing on the Start menu.

Then you have "Search" where you can search for certain files on your PC.

Suppose you're a fan of murder mysteries and you want to search the Web for the home pages of all your favorite authors in that genre.

These will likely need to be supplemented with a persistent query system customizable by the user that would set the queries, search sites, filters, and schedules for repeated queries.

If not already in the "Classic view", select the Classic view option (upper left corner of the window - you can switch between the classic view and the category view).

To change this setting, go online and load the page you wish to use. Click on the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, select Internet Options, a window will open, refer to the following picture, click on the general tab, select Use Current, click OK.

To find the uninstaller, select Settings, Control Panel from the Start menu, and double-click the Add or Remove Programs icon.

The client computer establishes a connection to the server.

In the client-server model, the term "server" describes the application that offers a service that can be utilized by any other application over the network.

Each player will connect to client program and the client program will request services to the server.

A server or network operating system is designed from the ground up to be a secure operating system.

When a computer is a "client" of a network, that computer can communicate and share information with other computers that are clients of the network.

At my office, I use a UNIX-clone, Linux, to provide my Internet connections, administrate my IntranetWare server, share files and printers with my Windows 95 and NT computers, and provide internal and external e-mail for all users.

Over time however, shared files, like all other areas of PC technology, have been improved upon - and so the problems begin.

Repeating is a means of extending the length a signal can travel before signal loss sets in.

If you've checked the fuse in your monitor's plug, but it's still not switching itself on, it may be that it's not receiving a signal from your PC.

Also inside the mouse are a switch for each button, and a microcontroller which interpret the signals from the sensors and the switches, using its firmware program to translate them into packets of data which are sent to the PC.

The end tag looks just like the start tag except a slash (/) precedes the text within the brackets.

You should find three ways to set the jumpers: master device, slave device, or cable select (which does what the name implies).

The first device acts as the master, and the second device acts as a slave.

Create sub-folders within that folder to sort the various documents, image, sounds and other files that you create and use. A new folder can be created easily and given a logical name which will help organize data.

In this case the list container has it's own sort because the generic sort algorithm only sorts containers which provide random access to the elements inside.

You can sort your items by clicking on the black triangle to the right of the word View. You can sort by size, date, the number of times visited, and the order you have visited today.

Databases make extensive use of temporary space to perform sorts and aggregations during parallel queries, particularly in cases where multiple queries are executing concurrently.

Take the bubble sort code, and use what you learned in the previous article to make a function from it.

This email appears to have been sent from one of my email addresses to another one of my email addresses, but in reality it is a SPAM.

This is done quite often by redirecting the e-mail through the SMTP server of an unsuspecting host, making the actual sender of the spam difficult to trace.

The stock in question is simply a junk company with a low valuation, and the hackers have already bought a large number of shares prior to sending out the spam.

If left unchecked, spam will seriously affect your PC. We look at the latest spam filters and show you how to protect yourself.

Typically harmless but always annoying, spam is the electronic equivalent of junk mail.

Use a spam filtering program for your e-mail so that much of the unwanted e-mail that is sent to you will be automatically deleted.

There's a useful software bundle that targets the home or family user; it's not just a spreadsheet and a word processor.

The spreadsheet works just like Excel. However, be careful with your graphing as we have found that the scales can sometimes be switched around from what you're used to if you've only ever produced graphs using Excel.

Spreadsheets are used to work with financial information. Spreadsheet charts are laid out in numbered rows and lettered columns.

Information from a spreadsheet can be displayed in chart form.

And that is why it is generally a bad idea to run a program, look at a document or use a spreadsheet that someone has sent you, especially if you do not know that person, or if you were not expecting them to send it to you.

Attachments that come in as Word files (.DOC), spreadsheets (.XLS), images (.GIF), etc., are data files and they can do no damage (noting the macro virus problem in Word and Excel documents mentioned above).

Spyware is malicious software that's secretly loaded onto your computer as you surf the Internet.

We're talking about 'malware', a term that describes all manner of malicious software, like damage-causing viruses, modem-hijacking rogue diallers and spyware.

No matter how you're connected the Internet, you're at risk from viruses, spyware and hackers - we'll discuss all of these nasties in more detail as you read on.

If successful, the program will start in that mode each time.

One of the services provided by your ISP is to provide a storage area or mailbox to collect email in.

Nonvolatile memory does not lose its data when the system or device is turned off. A number of types of memory fall into this category. The most familiar is ROM, but Flash memory storage devices such as CompactFlash or SmartMedia cards are also forms of nonvolatile memory.

The printer contains a CPU, standard TCP/IP protocols, and a storage device (e.g., a disk) for spooling files.

It is possible to save or move files anywhere that your computer can access. This includes disk (or other storage devices) on your computer, to any directory or sub-directory on your computer or on a network that your computer is connected to.

Hard Drive: This is that unit that actually stores your programs.

This buffer stores data temporarily while your system is off doing something else (as in a multitasking environment).

By storing frequently required pieces of information nearby, common tasks are made much quicker.

E-ttach. E-ttach is as much about sending files as it is about storing them.

If you don’t use My Documents and are blissfully unaware of its capabilities, you probably use the Save As command in Word to avoid storing documents under C:\MY DOCUMENTS.

TCP floods – A stream of TCP packets with various flags set are sent to the victim IP address.

Because packet flooding attacks typically strive to deplete available processing or bandwidth resources, the packet rate and volume of data associated with the packet stream are important factors in determining the attack’s degree of success.

If a byte stream had 100 packets in it, the sequence number field would be where each segment was numbered, so the receiver would know how to reassemble the stream.

Other possibilities include one-time password schemes, where the user enters his userid, and is presented with a ``challenge,'' a string of between six and eight numbers.

A char is a 1-byte single character (like 'a' or '3'). A string is declared as an array of characters.
